Bathroom fitting in Telford, built for very hard water

We fit and renovate bathrooms across Telford: the old towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Ironbridge, the new-town estates of Woodside, Brookside and Sutton Hill, and the newer homes at Lawley and Lightmoor Village. Full renovations, new bathrooms supply and fit or fit only, walk-in showers and wet rooms, ensuites, downstairs toilets, tiling, wall panels, plumbing and repairs, with a free survey, an itemised written quote and a registered electrician for anything that needs certifying. Telford is a town we cover regularly, and one thing shapes every bathroom we fit here: the water. Severn Trent's Telford Centre supply is very hard, around 305 milligrams per litre, the hardest anywhere we work, so we choose the shower, the glass and the grout with limescale in mind from the first visit.

Very hard water, and what it changes in a Telford bathroom

Severn Trent classes the Telford Centre supply zone as very hard: 21.33 Clark degrees, about 305 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre over the last year. For comparison, Wrexham's water is around 72. In a bathroom that means white crust on shower glass within a week, rainfall heads that block nozzle by nozzle, thermostatic cartridges that stiffen, electric shower elements that scale up and trip, and toilet fill valves that start to run.

None of that stops you having the bathroom you want; it changes the choices. We fit glass with a factory-applied easy-clean coating, shower heads with soft rubber nozzles you can rub clear, thermostatic valves from brands whose cartridges are sold separately, and a grout colour that does not show a tide line. If you are spending properly on a new bathroom, a water softener on the incoming main (with a separate drinking-water tap) is worth pricing alongside it, and we will plumb one in at the same time if you want it.

The new-town estates, the old towns and the newest villages

Most of Telford was built by the Development Corporation between the late 1960s and the early 1990s. Woodside, the largest estate it planned, and Brookside were laid out on the Radburn pattern, with front doors facing footpaths and green space and the cars in parking courts behind. For a bathroom job that means the van is rarely outside the front door, so a bath, a shower tray and a pallet of tiles are carried along the footpath; we plan the delivery and the rip-out around it and protect the route through the house. Sutton Hill, the first of the new-town estates, dates from the late 1960s.

The older towns that Telford absorbed are different houses altogether. Wellington, Oakengates and Madeley have Victorian and early twentieth-century terraces with the bathroom in the back addition, and Ironbridge sits inside the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. At Lawley and Lightmoor Village the houses are recent, the layouts work, and the job is usually replacing a developer bathroom: a thin tray, waist-height tiles and a pedestal basin swapped for a low stone-resin tray, full-height tiling or panels and a wall-hung vanity.

Telford and Wrekin building control and the Gorge

Telford and Wrekin Council runs its own building control service. On a bathroom job it needs to know about new drainage connections and structural work; the electrics are self-certified by our registered electrician and you get the certificate. In the Severn Gorge conservation area around Ironbridge, and in the Wellington conservation area, an extractor grille on a street-facing wall is worth avoiding, so we route ducting to the rear wherever the house allows and tell you at the survey if it does not.

Seeing bathrooms in Telford before you buy

Stafford Park is where Telford shops for bathrooms. City Plumbing has a bathroom showroom there, Topps Tiles is a few units away, and Your Bathroom Showroom on Queensway Link has displays and a design studio. Wickes Telford carries suites off the shelf. If you choose from one of those, send us the product list before we quote and we will check the shower suits your pressure and that nothing is missing from the boxes. If you would rather we shortlist, we bring samples to you and price each item on the quote.

What we do in Telford

  • Full bathroom renovations in the new-town estates, the old towns and the newer villages
  • Developer bathrooms replaced at Lawley and Lightmoor Village
  • Walk-in showers and wet rooms, with fittings chosen for very hard water
  • Water softeners plumbed in on the incoming main during a renovation
  • Ensuites, downstairs toilets and small bathroom layouts
  • Tiling, wall panels, plumbing, towel rails, extractor fans and lighting (electrician certified)
  • Descaling problems fixed: blocked heads, stiff thermostatic cartridges, running toilet fill valves

Example scenario: a Woodside house on a Radburn footpath

A 1970s house with a 1.8 by 1.7 metre bathroom and a scaled-up electric shower over the bath. The bath comes out and a 1400 by 800 low tray goes in with a fixed glass panel, a thermostatic mixer replacing the electric unit, easy-clean glass, wall panels in the shower (no grout to stain), a wall-hung vanity and a humidity fan. Everything is carried in from the parking court along the path. Five working days, with a water softener priced as an option on the quote.

A burst pipe in Telford

Telford is outside the area we reach in a same-night emergency, so a local plumber will be quicker for a burst pipe in Wellington, Madeley or Lawley. After that we repair the bathroom or refit it, and in water as hard as Telford's we choose replacement valves and fittings with limescale in mind.

Questions

Bathroom questions from Telford

How hard is the water in Telford?

Very hard. Severn Trent lists the Telford Centre supply zone at 21.33 Clark degrees, about 305 milligrams per litre, measured over the last year. That is the hardest water anywhere we fit bathrooms, roughly four times Wrexham's, and it decides the shower, the glass coating and the grout colour we recommend.

Is a water softener worth it with a new bathroom in Telford?

Often, yes. With water this hard, a softener on the incoming main protects the shower valve, the glass and any electric shower element, and keeps a new bathroom looking new. We price it as a separate line on the quote, with a drinking-water tap left on hard water, and fit it while the plumbing is open.

Can you work on a Radburn-layout house where the van cannot park outside?

Yes. On Woodside, Brookside and similar estates we plan for carrying materials from the parking court, protect the path and the hallway, and book the skip or waste collection where it can actually be reached. It adds a little time on the first and last days, which is in the quote.

Do you fit bathrooms bought from the showrooms at Stafford Park?

Yes. City Plumbing's showroom, Topps Tiles and Your Bathroom Showroom are all at Stafford Park, and Wickes is in town. Send us the order list before we quote so we can check the valve suits your pressure and that waste kits and fixings are included.

Does Telford and Wrekin Council need to know about my bathroom?

Only for some of it. New drainage connections and structural work go through the council's building control; the electrics are certified by our registered electrician. We tell you at the survey which, if any, apply to your job.
