Flats, towers and the new Walks
Flint's housing has changed more in the last fifteen years than most towns'. The 1960s maisonettes at Coleshill Lea and Castle Lea were demolished in phases between 2013 and 2016 and replaced by The Walks, 92 council and affordable homes, with 72 apartments for older people built alongside under Flintshire's regeneration programme. The town centre keeps its three tower blocks, Bolingbroke Heights, Richard Heights and Castle Heights, so flats with small bathrooms are a large part of the stock. The Chester Road corridor and Church Street have the older terraces, and Oakenholt and Flint Mountain the family semis. In all, about 5,000 homes for around 13,700 people.
What that means for us: a lot of 1.6 by 1.9 metre bathrooms where the layout has to be right first time, wall-hung furniture to show some floor, a walk-in shower rather than a bath where nobody takes one, and in the flats, a plan agreed with the building manager around the shared soil stack and the lift. In the semis at Oakenholt and Flint Mountain the work is more usual: bath-to-shower conversions, ensuites and the occasional wet room.
Welsh Water and the pressure in the towers
Every CH6 postcode is on Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, and no hardness figure is published for Flint's zone that we can quote, so we do not state one. We measure pressure and flow at the survey, which in Flint matters more than anywhere: a flat on an upper floor of Castle Heights and a bungalow at Oakenholt can have very different flow, and the shower that works in one will disappoint in the other.
Flintshire building control
Flint comes under Flintshire County Council's in-house building control, which asks for full plans or a building notice at least two working days before notifiable work starts. New drainage and structural changes are notified; the Part P electrics are self-certified by the registered electrician we work with. Flint Castle on the foreshore is a scheduled monument, but for the ordinary house or flat there is no conservation constraint on where an extractor vents, and we take the shortest route to outside.
Where to see bathrooms in Flint
Huws Gray on Holywell Road has a bathroom and kitchen showroom, the nearest in the town, and Screwfix at Heinzel Park covers the trade counter side. The Plumbline's Chester branch supplies the town for plumbing and bathrooms. For a wider choice, Chester's Sealand Road is about twenty-five minutes along the A548. We source through those merchants, bring samples to you, or fit what you have chosen elsewhere; either way the quote lists each item.

Example scenario: a flat on an upper floor of one of the three towers
A 1.6 by 1.9 metre bathroom in a 1960s flat with a bath nobody uses, a pedestal basin and a cistern that runs. Hours agreed with the building manager, the lift and corridor protected. We fit a 1200 by 800 low tray with a fixed glass panel, a thermostatic shower chosen for the measured upper-floor pressure, a 500 millimetre wall-hung vanity, a short-projection toilet on the existing stack connection, wall panels throughout, a vinyl-free porcelain floor and a quiet humidity fan. Four working days.
Burst pipes and overflowing toilets in Flint
Flint is about 31 minutes from our base, so we take bathroom emergencies in the town, at Oakenholt and up on Flint Mountain 24/7: WhatsApp or ring. In the tower blocks and other flats on a shared stack, a blocked or leaking soil pipe can affect more than one home, so tell the neighbours and whoever manages the building as well. Leaks in the street are Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's.
