Victorian Hoole, post-war Blacon and the Garden Quarter
Hoole is the Chester we work in most: streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces mixed with 1930s semis and converted flats. The terraces have solid brick walls, lime plaster that comes away when old tiles are removed, and a bathroom in the back addition or in what was once a third bedroom. We board the walls before tiling, replace the cast-iron waste that usually lurks under the floor, and fit a walk-in shower where a short bath stood. Handbridge, Curzon Park, Queens Park, Hoole Road and Dee Banks are Victorian and Edwardian suburbs too, each a conservation area, with bigger rooms and bigger budgets.
Blacon, two miles north-west, was developed in the 1950s and early 1960s and has the compact post-war bathroom with the separate toilet beside it; knocking the two together is the job that makes those houses work. Upton is the family suburb of larger semis and detached houses, where ensuites and second bathrooms are the common ask. Around the University of Chester, the Garden Quarter has a high concentration of student houses, and an Article 4 direction has required planning permission for new small HMOs there since 2013, so landlords tend to refurbish the bathrooms they already have rather than add more.
Chester's water: Severn Trent, moderately soft
Unlike Wrexham next door, Chester is supplied by Severn Trent, which took over Dee Valley Water's English side in 2018. The City and Newton zones are 97 milligrams per litre, which the supplier calls moderately soft; Pipers Ash is a little harder at 106, and the Saltney edge on Hafren Dyfrdwy is 101. The practical result is modest limescale: a rainfall head stays clear with an occasional wipe, and a softener is not necessary. The bigger variable in Chester is pressure, which differs from a Hoole terrace on an old main to a new-build off Wrexham Road, so we measure it at the survey before recommending a shower.
Cheshire West building control and 96 conservation areas
Cheshire West and Chester Council runs building control in-house and, since April 2024, takes applications on its own form rather than through Submit-a-Plan. For a bathroom that means a building notice for new drainage connections or structural work, while the Part P electrics are self-certified by our electrician. The whole city centre has been a conservation area since 1969 and the borough has 96 in all, including Curzon Park, Handbridge, Hoole Road, Queens Park and Upton Park, so on a street-facing house we route extractor ducting to the rear and keep external grilles off the front elevation.
Where Chester customers go to choose
Sealand Road is the place to start: Wickes, Clifton Trade Bathrooms on the Sealand Industrial Estate and Easy Bathrooms and Tiles on Bumpers Lane are within a few hundred metres of each other. City Plumbing's showroom is on River Lane in Saltney, The Plumbline is on Broughton Mills Road, and there is an independent showroom on Long Lane in Upton. If you have chosen from one of those, send us the list before we quote; if not, we shortlist for you and bring samples.

Example scenario: a Hoole terrace with a bathroom in the back addition
An Edwardian terrace off Hoole Road, bathroom 2.6 by 1.7 metres with the window at the far end and lime plaster that has blown behind the old tiles. We take everything back to brick, board and tank the walls, replace the cast-iron waste with plastic at a proper fall, fit a 1400 walk-in shower at the window end, a wall-hung vanity and toilet along the party wall, large-format porcelain on the floor, a lit mirror and a quiet humidity fan ducted to the rear. Seven working days.
Water through a ceiling in Chester at night
Bathroom emergencies in Chester are taken 24/7: a WhatsApp message or a call reaches Nikolay at any hour, and the city is about 22 minutes from our Wrexham base. In the Hoole and Boughton terraces an old cast-iron waste under the bathroom floor is a common source, and the sooner the stopcock goes off, the less ceiling there is to repair. Leaks in the road or before the outside stop tap go to Severn Trent; our Chester emergency page has the rest.
