Housing from the ironworks to the garden village
Wolverham was built from 1905 as a workers' village for the Mersey Ironworks, and Westminster's early-twentieth-century terraces run down towards the Ship Canal; both have solid walls and bathrooms added later, often in a back extension. The post-war expansion gave the town Hope Farm, Grange Farm and Stanney, mixed council and private estates, with the 1950s houses built for the Vauxhall workforce when the plant opened in 1962: compact bathrooms, separate toilets, concrete ground floors and timber uppers. The three thirteen-storey Joseph Groome Towers from the 1960s have small flats with small bathrooms and a shared soil stack, which needs planning around.
At the other end of the timeline, Ledsham Garden Village at Little Sutton has outline consent for up to 2,000 homes and more than a thousand already built, which means a large share of the town's bathrooms are developer-specified and under ten years old. The upgrade from the builder's enclosure, pedestal basin and waist-height tiles to a proper shower and wall-hung furniture is the single most common Ellesmere Port job we are asked for.
United Utilities: soft to moderately soft
Ellesmere Port is on United Utilities, with the Hapsford zone at 89 milligrams per litre, Ellesmere Port at 99 and Sutton Hall North at 93, all soft to moderately soft on twelve-month averages. Limescale is a slow problem here: glass and chrome stay clean with ordinary care, electric shower elements last, and softeners are rarely worth it. Pressure, as everywhere, varies by street and by floor, and in the tower blocks and the newer three-storey town houses it is the thing to measure before choosing a shower, which we do at the survey.
Building control and the Docks conservation area
Ellesmere Port shares Cheshire West and Chester Council's in-house building control with Chester, with offices at The Portal on Wellington Road, and applications go in on the council's own form. New drainage and structural work are notified; the Part P electrics are self-certified by our electrician and you keep the certificate. The town's conservation areas are the Docks Basin and the Chester Canal corridor, so most houses are free of restrictions on where an extractor vents, and we take the shortest honest duct route.
Junction 8 and Cromwell Road: seeing bathrooms locally
Junction 8 Business Park on Rossfield Road has City Plumbing's Bathroom Showroom and, next door, Junction 8 Tile and Stone with 8,000 square feet of tiles, which between them cover most of what a renovation needs. There is an independent bathroom showroom on Cromwell Road, and The Plumbline's Chester branch supplies the town. Many customers buy there and we fit; we ask for the order list first so the shower suits the pressure and the waste kits are not missing on the first day.

Example scenario: a Vauxhall-era semi on the Hope Farm estate
A 1950s semi with a 1.8 by 1.7 metre bathroom and a separate toilet next door, concrete ground floor, timber first floor. We remove the partition, fit a 1400 by 800 low tray with a fixed panel where the bath was, a wall-hung toilet on the stack wall with a boxed cistern, a 600 millimetre vanity, wall panels in the shower, porcelain on the floor, a towel rail where the old radiator was and a humidity fan. Six working days, toilet back in use by day three.
Emergencies in Ellesmere Port, from Whitby to Great Sutton
About 28 minutes up the M53 from Wrexham, Ellesmere Port is inside our 24/7 emergency area: message or call if a pipe bursts or a toilet overflows, whatever the hour. In a flat, a leak can reach the home below quickly, so turn the water off and tell the neighbour downstairs too. United Utilities looks after leaks in the street and before the outside stop tap.
