Georgian fronts, timber frames and Tilstock Road new-builds
High Street and Dodington are lined with Georgian houses, many of them timber-framed buildings refaced in brick in the eighteenth century, with seventeenth-century half-timbering still showing on Watergate Street; the town has more than a hundred listed buildings and St Alkmund's is Grade I. Bathrooms in those houses sit at the back or on a half-landing, between walls that are neither straight nor square, over floors that slope, with soil pipes that have been rerouted more than once. We level, board and tank before anything is tiled, and we keep every vent off the street elevation.
On the other side of town, Tilstock Road has a cluster of new-build schemes, Talbot Place and Castle Reach among them, where the developer's bathroom and ensuite are the ones owners replace after a few years. Between the two are the semis and bungalows of the outer roads, Alkington, Edgeley and Chester Road, with the standard family bathroom and, often, a separate toilet worth knocking through. Prices run higher in the south of the town than the north, and the bigger detached houses there tend to want a second bathroom or an ensuite built.
Hard water, so the fittings are chosen for it
Severn Trent supplies most of SY13 and every zone around the town is hard: Brockhurst 228, Stoke Tern 226, Shiffords Bridge 232, Overton Scar 260 and Ellesmere 274 milligrams per litre. Scale shows on shower glass within weeks, rainfall heads block, electric shower elements fur, and polished chrome dulls. We fit thermostatic mixers with rubber-nozzle heads you wipe clean, glass with a limescale-resistant coating, brushed finishes rather than polished, and we talk through a softener, which in water this hard protects the boiler and cylinder as well as the bathroom. Electric showers here need descaling or a new element more often than in Wrexham, and we say so before you choose one.
Shropshire building control and a conservation area at risk
Whitchurch is under Shropshire Council's in-house building control, run from Shrewsbury under the English Building Regulations: new drainage and structural work are notified, the Part P electrics are self-certified by our electrician. The town-centre conservation area, designated in 1987, went onto Historic England's Heritage at Risk register in 2017, with replacement uPVC windows named as one of the problems, so external changes on High Street and Dodington houses draw scrutiny. A bathroom is internal work and needs no permission, but an extractor grille on a front elevation is exactly the kind of thing the conservation officer notices, and we duct to the rear.
Choosing a bathroom in Whitchurch
Whitchurch has more choice than a town its size usually does: Huws Gray at Waymills has a kitchen and bathroom showroom, and there is an independent bathroom, bedroom and kitchen showroom on the High Street. The Plumbline's Shrewsbury branch supplies the town for plumbing. For the widest range, Wrexham and Chester are each around half an hour. We source through the merchant, shortlist with samples at home, or fit what you have chosen, checking the shower against the hard water and your pressure first.
The work we do in Whitchurch
- Full renovations in Georgian and timber-framed town houses, floors levelled and walls boarded
- Developer bathrooms and ensuites on Tilstock Road replaced
- Separate toilet and bathroom knocked into one in the Alkington and Chester Road semis
- Ensuites and second bathrooms in the larger houses south of the town
- Showers, glass and brassware specified for hard water, with softener advice
- Wet rooms and level-access showers
- Tiling, wall panels, towel rails, fans and lighting (electrician certified)
- Descaling, resealing, regrouting and leak repairs
Example scenario: a Georgian house on Dodington
A bathroom on the half-landing of a listed Georgian house, 2.4 by 1.9 metres, with a timber-framed partition behind the plaster and a floor that slopes 30 millimetres to the back wall. Listed building consent is confirmed as not needed for the internal fit-out. We level the floor over the existing boards, line and tank the walls without touching the frame, fit a 1200 walk-in shower on the internal wall with coated glass and a rubber-nozzle head, a freestanding-look vanity, a close-coupled toilet on a renewed waste, porcelain on the floor and a fan ducted to the rear roof slope. An inline scale inhibitor on the shower feed and a softener quoted separately. Seven working days.
Emergency plumbing in Whitchurch bathrooms
Whitchurch is about 33 minutes along the A525, just inside the area we cover for emergencies, so a burst pipe or a running cistern means a WhatsApp or a call to us at any hour. In the old houses of the town centre, stopping water through a ceiling quickly saves a lot of old plaster. Severn Trent is responsible for leaks in the street and before the outside stop tap.
