New-town houses, and why construction type matters
The 1960s and 70s estates were not all built the same way, and for a bathroom that matters. Murdishaw and Windmill Hill, from the later 1970s, are two-storey red-brick houses in landscaped layouts, conventional to work in. Castlefields was system-built in precast concrete; from 2002 the Castlefields Partnership demolished more than 700 deck-access flats and rebuilt lower-rise red-brick housing, largely finished by 2012, so the surviving older blocks and the new houses sit side by side. The Southgate estate was demolished altogether in the early 1990s. So the first thing we check on a Runcorn survey is what the walls and floors are actually made of, because fixing a wall-hung toilet frame or cutting a wet room drain into a precast floor is a different job from doing it in brick and timber.
Sandymoor, mostly built after 1990, has conventional developer bathrooms reaching the age where owners want a better shower and a wall-hung vanity. The Old Town, Higher Runcorn, Weston and Weston Point have Victorian terraces and inter-war semis with the back-addition bathrooms and older pipework those houses bring.
Runcorn water
Runcorn shares the Runcorn West and Frodsham zone with its neighbour across the Weaver, and United Utilities' own figure for it is 93 milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate: moderately soft, samples between 66 and 124. Limescale builds slowly, normal cleaning keeps glass and chrome clear, and a softener is not something we would suggest. We measure pressure and flow at the survey, particularly in the tower-side flats and the older terraces, before you choose a shower.
Halton building control and the three conservation areas
Halton Borough Council is a unitary authority and runs its own building control, taking full plans by email; new drainage, structural work and bathroom electrics are the notifiable parts of a bathroom job, and the electrics that need certifying are done by a registered electrician we work with, with the certificate handed to you. Runcorn has three of the borough's ten conservation areas: Higher Runcorn, designated in 1975 with Article 4 restrictions on some permitted development, Halton Village around the castle (1970) and Weston Village (1991). In those, an extractor vent or a soil pipe on a visible elevation is a consent question, and we route to the rear where we can.

James Hargreaves on Pimlico Road has nine bathroom displays beside the trade counter, Ringway Plumbing and Bathroom Supplies has a showroom open to trade and public, Gallery Kitchens and Bathrooms is at the Picow Farm Road depot, and Ocean Bathrooms is on Bridgeway West at Windmill Hill. Choose in any of them and we fit it, or ask us to put a shortlist together and price each item on the quote.

Example scenario: a Murdishaw house
A late-1970s red-brick semi with a 2 by 1.9 metre bathroom, bath under the window, half-height tiles and a separate toilet next door. We take the partition out, fit a 1500 by 800 walk-in shower where the bath was, a wall-hung toilet on the stack wall, a 600 millimetre vanity, wall panels in the shower, porcelain on the floor, a towel rail and a humidity fan ducted to the rear. Six working days, toilet back in use on day three.
Out-of-hours leaks in Runcorn
Runcorn is outside our same-night emergency area, so for a burst pipe at night a local plumber will reach Palacefields or Halton Brook sooner than we can. Once the water is stopped, WhatsApp us the photos and we quote the repair, or the new bathroom if the old one is past saving.
